Through the Eyes of a Patient

by Shriners on April 13, 2012

“Shriners,

Thank you for all your support and care. Our daughter would not have the independence she has without the walker you provided. You are such a wonderful organization. A great comfort knowing when no one else will give help and support – you guys do. We thank God for you on a daily basis.

Love you our daughter,

Lainee Grace, 3 years old”

Meet Katie England

by Shriners on April 6, 2012

“Another Easter, and the Easter Bunny gets all the glamour and glory. Chicks have just one thing to say to the Easter Bunny … your baskets would be empty if it wasn’t for chicks.”
This cute card was Katie England’s way of expressing her gratitude to the Prosthetics and Orthotics department at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Greenville. The spunky nine-year-old has been a patient at the hospital for five years. Born with spina bifida, a neural tube disorder where a section of the neural tube fails to develop or close properly before birth, she comes to the hospital’s spina bifida clinic and to get orthotics. The orthotics brace her legs and help keep her feet straight. Katie says, “I love coming to this hospital. It’s the coolest place!”

(On the front of Katie’s card is a picture of her three-year-old hen, Chelsey. Chelsey is seen at her finest: wearing lipstick, blue eye shadow, painted toenails, body glitter, and rhinestone body stickers.)

Little Miss Easley Makes a Special Donation

by Shriners on April 5, 2012

Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Greenville received a special visit from Little Miss Easley, Kassidy Gilliland. Kassidy brought a tote bag full of can tabs to donate and two baskets filled with Easter goodies for patients. She chose Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville as her platform because, “my Aunt was treated at this hospital. She wouldn’t be walking today if it weren’t for this hospital.” Kassidy says, “Aunt Deidra is one of my biggest fans and is always there to support me at pageants. I know that without Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville, Aunt Deidra may not be able to help as much.”

Kassidy will represent Easley in the Little Miss South Carolina Pageant in June.

FBLA Makes a HUGE Build-A-Bear Donation

by Shriners on April 2, 2012

Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Greenville would like to say a big “Thank You” to the South Carolina Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) for their generous donation of Build-A-Bears™ to the hospital’s Bear Cub Club. For the fifth year in a row, South Carolina’s FBLA has chosen the hospital as one of the recipients of their annual fundraising efforts. Each year, the FBLA has donated at least 250 bears to the hospital. Because of their yearly donation, every patient who comes into the hospital for surgery is welcomed with a brand new Build-A-Bear™, outfit of choice, and an authentic Build-A-Bear™ birth certificate. If the child requires additional surgeries at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville they can choose a new outfit to go with their bear.

According to the South Carolina FBLA web site, “The Future Business Leaders of America is a national student organization for all students in grades nine through twelve who initially become FBLA members while enrolled in a business or business-related course.” FBLA is the largest student business organization in the world with over 250,000 members.

Here’s a video of the FBLA students bringing in their bears to donate:

Spring and Summer Safety Series

by Shriners on March 30, 2012

With warm weather in the forecast for the next several months, Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Greenville wants you to have all the information you need for your family to have a fun and safe summer. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “approximately 3.5 million children under 15 years of age receive medical attention for sports and recreation related injuries each year.” While a child with an injury is typically seen at an emergency room first, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville is an excellent environment for all follow up care. In fact, each year Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville cares for many children with a variety of injuries resulting from accidents involving trampolines, personal watercrafts, lawnmowers, ATVs, and campfires.

Trampoline Safety

Trampolines may seem like a good idea for burning off extra energy, but more than 100,000 children are injured on trampolines each year. Most of these injuries occur at home. Some of these injuries include: broken bones, concussions and other head injuries, permanent paralysis, and neck injuries. Here are a few steps you can take to help prevent serious injury while playing on a trampoline:

  • Allow only one person on the trampoline at a time.
  • Do not attempt or allow somersaults. (landing on the head or neck can cause paralysis)
  • Do not use trampoline without shock-absorbing pads completely covering its springs, hooks, and frame.
  • Place the trampoline away from structures, trees, and other play areas.
  • No child under 6 years of age should use a full-size trampoline.
  • Do not use a ladder with the trampoline because it provides unsupervised access by small children.
  • Always supervise children who use a trampoline.
  • Trampoline enclosures can help prevent injuries from falls off trampolines.

Keep checking back for more spring and summer safety tips!

The team in the Movement Analysis Laboratory at Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Greenville has developed a new method to measure and analyze the foot motion. The new approach provides more detailed information about how the parts of the foot are moving while walking. This information is particularly important in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy seen in the Movement Analysis Laboratory. “Patients with cerebral palsy often present with some degree of foot abnormality,” notes Roy Davis, Ph.D., Director of Shriners Hospitals for Children – Greenville’s Movement Analysis Laboratory. “Using the new foot model allows our interdisciplinary team to study a patient’s pattern of movement as well as better understand the support the foot provides for the patient’s lower extremities, a necessary component in addressing the needs of the pediatric patient with cerebral palsy.” Clinicians in Canada and Europe as well as within the Shriners Hospitals for Children have begun to explore the new detailed information that this evaluation tool provides for treatment planning.
