Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Greenville’s Clinical Laboratory collects, processes, and analyzes more than 14,000 tests each year. To collect many of those samples, lab technicians must stick a child with a needle. Having a shot or getting blood drawn is scary event for most children. Always looking for new and innovative ways to comfort patients, now, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville is using a new device to help ease the anxiety almost any procedure can create for a child. Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville’s laboratory has begun using Buzzy® a friendly, vibrating bee that helps reduce or even eliminate the needle pain. By placing a vibrating Buzzy® above the injection site, the sensation confuses the nerves and distracts the child’s attention away from the needle stick. The bee not only vibrates, but it also features ice wings which can be used to both numb the injection site and dull the pain. Both patients and parents at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville are surprised at how well Buzzy® works and appreciate the lab working extra hard to make the process of a needle stick as painless as possible.
